Here are a few gas saving ideas:
- Don't fill up! That's right - only fill your tank halfway. Your half tank weighs between 80 and 120 lbs (based on your gas-tank size), and you'll never need more than half a tank to get back to where you came from, right? So why burn gas carrying around additional weight?
- Keep your tire pressure at the high requirement. Why does it make a difference? Find out at CarTest!
- Keep your windows closed. Why? Cars are designed for aerodynamics. It reduces air resistance. When windows are open, your engine has to work harder to move the car, and a hard-working engine burns more gas.
- Keep your gas cap tight. Evaporation can steal 15% of your hard earned mileage in hot weather.
- Get divorced (let them buy their own gas...). OK, yeah, this one's a joke. The idea is, think outside the box. If we all keeping thinking the same old ways, we'll never solve oil industry problems that hit our budgets and destroy our chance to leave the earth in good shape for our kids.
- Purchase a GPS device and discover you've always been driving the longer route home.
- Unload that silly junk in the trunk you've been dragging all around. Every 250 extra pounds costs about 1 mile per gallon.
- Count your brake taps for common trips. Challenge to keep distance, anticipate, and drive with the least braking on common trips (like going to work). Count how many times you hit the brake, and try to beat it on your next trip - but anticipate your acceleration and leave good distances.
